Renell Ford, RDN, LD; Child Nutrition Dietitian; Frisco Independent School District; Frisco, Texas

Renell Ford is a dedicated leader in school nutrition who skillfully manages a wide range of responsibilities while making a meaningful difference in the lives of the students and staff she serves. From crafting diverse menus to mentoring the next generation of dietitians, her influence touches the lives over 65,000 students across 77 schools. Renell has redefined what it means to provide nutritious, inclusive, and innovative school meals.

Accounting for the dietary needs of such a large student body is no small feat, but Renell always manages to accommodate food allergies, curate balanced menus that cater to a wide range of preferences, and ensure that every student has access to meals that are both delicious and nourishing. She finds her role particularly rewarding because no two days are ever the same, and the challenges motivate her to continually improve.

One of her proudest moments as a school nutrition professional came from helping a student with severe allergies enjoy lunch in the cafeteria just like their peers. Creating safe and inclusive food experiences is a cornerstone of her approach, and it’s moments like those that remind Renell why her work matters so deeply.

Under her guidance, Frisco ISD has become a leader in sustainable practices. She implemented hydroponic garden towers at two high schools, systems that not only provide fresh lettuce for school salads but also offer “living classrooms” for students. The garden towers help students learn about science, agriculture, and the importance of healthy eating — an innovative blend of education and nutrition.

Renell’s impact isn’t limited to her current district. She has mentored several interns, giving them invaluable hands-on experience and fostering a passion for school nutrition. Her contributions to the School Health Advisory Council and the development of the district’s School Wellness Policy further cement her role as a leader in her field.

At Frisco ISD, students enjoy an array of meals, with the Tex-Mex line at high schools, pizza day at elementary schools, and nacho day at middle schools topping the list of favorites. Popular items from General Mills Foodservice include Pillsbury™ Frozen Mini Bagels, individually wrapped cereal bars, Bowlpak cereals, Mott’s® Medleys, and Yoplait® cereal yogurt choices.

Part of what sets Frisco ISD apart is its strong commitment to inclusivity. Renell takes pride in offering meals that accommodate the district’s diverse population, ensuring that every student feels welcomed and supported during mealtime.

Renell’s advice for others in the K-12 foodservice field is clear: prioritize understanding and communication. “By being open, proactive, and flexible, we can create environments where everyone feels supported and valued,” she says. Whether addressing dietary restrictions or cultural preferences, her approach emphasizes empathy and collaboration.

Renell’s passion for school nutrition, sustainability, and inclusivity has created many positive outcomes for Frisco ISD. As she steps away for maternity leave, it’s clear that her legacy will continue to inspire students, staff, and colleagues alike. We can’t wait to see what new heights Renell will reach when she returns — she’s truly one of a kind!
